Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Public School Funding in Montana is at an inadequate level. SS
2. Parents should have greater freedom to choose how and where their children are educated, including options such as education savings accounts, tax credits, vouchers, or other school-choice mechanisms. S* Because I believe that they weaken our public schools I oppose vouchers and tax credits for private schools
3. Parents should be allowed to homeschool their children without additional state regulation S* As someone who was a teacher for many years, and as the grandmother of a home schooled granddaughter, I believe that home schooling is a good option for some children. I also believe that students should, at some point, be given the opportunity to learn in a classroom environment. This is where they learn how to express their thoughts to others and how to respect the opinions of others. This is where their window on the world is expanded in preparation for independence.
4. Curricula based on Critical Race Theory (CRT) should be prohibited in Montana public schools SO
5. Comprehensive sex education should be taught in public elementary schools, beginning as early as kindergarten. O
6. Montana’s income taxes are too high. S
7. Montana’s property taxes are too high SS
8. Montana’s corporate taxes are too high SO* Montana's budget needs to be rebalanced so that corporate welfare and such things as no bid contracts are prohibited. Money needs to be invested instead in things like affordable child care and transportation for working people.
9. The Second Amendment protects the right of law-abiding citizens to own firearms for self-defense. S
10. Montanans should not be discriminated against or treated differently based on their vaccination status. S* As someone who was a nurse for almost forty years I have watched nurses work themselves into exhaustion in order to provide the best care possible regardless of vaccine status or a life history of self abuse. Unfortunately as a result our “health” care system has suffered such extreme stress that it may never recover to the point where everyone who needs care actually gets it.
11. Climate change is a serious problem that requires increased government regulation. S
12. Environmental regulations in Montana are currently too restrictive. O* I am saddened by the degree to which our natural environment is being degraded in the name of unrestrained profit and greed. Because of this I am spending my autumn years trying to build a place where my children, my grandchildren, and those who come after can live sustainably as our environment, both physical and social. continue to change in unhealthy ways.
13. Abortion should be illegal at all stages of pregnancy. O
14. Abortion should be legal only in the early stages of pregnancy and restricted after a specific point, except when necessary to save the life of the mother. O* Saving the life of the mother may not be the only reason an abortion is necessary. Carrying a compromised or dead fetus to term compromises the mother in other ways. For.instance she may never be able to have more children.I do not understand what is meant by “opt out”, above. Certainly no one should be made to participate in an abortion if they are morally opposed to this. On the other hand a pharmacist, who knows that his license certifies him as someone who dispenses medication m, should provide patients with prescribed medication or forfeit his license.
15. Abortion should remain legal at all stages of pregnancy, without restriction. SO
16. Individuals and organizations should be allowed to opt out of abortion-related mandates, if those mandates violate their religious or moral convictions. O
17. Physician-assisted suicide should be legal in Montana. S* As someone who has been a hospice nurse I believe that each of us has the right to decide how we will die. To deny assistance to a terminally ill person robs them of self determination at a time when this may be the only thing they have left.
18. Biological males who identify as transgender should be allowed to compete in women’s and girl's athletic competitions. O
19. Medical procedures intended to change a minor’s sex or gender should be prohibited. S* With regard to minors, while I oppose surgical alterations for minors I believe that in some cases it is the family's responsibility to make decisions regarding the use of medications.
20. Same-sex couples should be permitted to adopt children. SS
21. State and local nondiscrimination laws should be expanded to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the same manner as race, religion, and national origin. S
22. Montana’s marriage laws should be revised to reflect the U.S. Supreme Court’s legalization of same-sex marriage. S* Montana laws already prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Montana law also supports same sex marriage despite constitutional opinion.
23. Objective moral truths exist and should inform laws and public policy, rather than shifting cultural preferences. O
24. Government should be limited in scope, with most decisions best made by individuals, families, and local communities rather than centralized authorities. S
25. Homosexuals and transgender people should be allowed to adopt children: SS
26. Personal responsibility and self-governance are more effective at solving social problems than expanded government programs: S
27. Parents—not government institutions—are the primary authority responsible for the education and moral formation of their children: S* I'm concerned that when we disagree you will attempt to impose your “moral truths” on me. While we probably closely agree on matters of right and wrong I, and others, must be allowed to take responsibility for our own beliefs and the ways in which they function in our lives. What are these “shifting cultural preferences”?My greatest concern, at this time, is a total and infectious disregard for the law. That certainly appears to be a cultural preference and it predisposes an appetite for cruelty.
